A Stratford man will spend two months behind bars for his illegal purchase of a firearm at a Newington gun store, federal prosecutors say.
Tymon Peterson, 29, also was ordered during sentencing in New Haven federal court on his conviction of one count of making a false statement during a firearm purchase to serve his first four months of supervised release in home confinement and pay an $1,800 fine, according to the Connecticut U.S. Attorney’s Office.
According to federal investigators and Newington police, in Aug. and Sept. 2017, Peterson and Jamal Weir texted one another about purchasing firearms. Peterson possessed a valid pistol permit and was able to purchase firearms legally, but Weir, as a convicted felon, was banned from possessing firearms.
On Sept. 22, 2017, Weir and Peterson went to Hoffman’s Gun Center in Newington, and Peterson, with cash provided by Weir, purchased at least one semi-automatic pistol on his behalf.
Peterson filled out a federal firearms-purchase form in which he falsely represented that he was the actual purchaser weapon, and that he was not acquiring the firearm for another person, investigators said. Peterson gave the pistol to Weir after they exited the store.
Weir was sentenced May 29 to 21 months in prison for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, authorities said.
Weir’s criminal history includes state convictions for illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, possession of narcotics with intent to sell, and carrying a pistol without a permit.
This seems eminently fair to me,if this is his only offense. And certainly loss of his carry permit accompanied it.
