Independent grocery chain implements smart, AI-powered shopping carts at CT locations

Seven Geissler’s Supermarket locations in Connecticut and Massachusetts are to implement a new AI-powered smart shopping cart.

The “Caper Carts” are equipped with cameras, sensors and a built-in scale. They feature an interactive screen that provides access to coupons and discounts, displays product information and can help shoppers track their spending. The cart can recommend products depending on the consumer’s location in the store.

The technology is provided by Instacart, the grocery technology company that also provides online shopping, pickup and delivery services.

Geissler's says it is the first grocer to replace a majority of its traditional shopping carts with Caper Carts at all locations.

"These carts go beyond grocery shopping; they boost sales, enhance the visibility of promotions and affordability, and create new ad revenue streams for the retailer through engaging digital displays,” said Nick Nickitas, general manager of local independent grocery at Instacart.
