A Middletown couple is looking to open a tattoo and body piercing parlor in a Main Street storefront, but would first need a zoning exception from the city Planning and Zoning Commission.
Holli and Alexander Strobel of Goldtooth Tattoo Co. LLC are looking to open a 1,100-square-foot, first-floor storefront at 466 Main St., in a building owned by New Haven-based YSL Holdings.
Holli Strobel, a Middletown native, has been a nationally-renowned tattoo artist for 12 years, and has appeared in two seasons of the Paramount Network’s reality television competition show Ink Master, according to the application.
They are seeking approval of their site plan as well as a special exception permit at the commission meeting tonight since current zoning regulations prohibit tattoos and piercing establishments in the Main Street B1 business zone.
The Strobels said the city’s Plan of Conservation and Development encourages building and growing a diverse and vibrant culture within the Main Street business zone.
The couple started Goldtooth Tattoo Co. two years ago and are looking to establish a permanent business in “the freshly revitalized city.”
They said tattooing has become a widely accepted and highly regarded art form and career path, and that tattoo studios are cultural destinations.
“We feel we can add to the vibrancy and cultural growth of Middletown’s famous Main Street, with a modern, clean and artistically focused tattoo studio,” the applicants said.
