A cookie store chain that caters to insomniacs – including college students studying into the wee hours of the morning – plans to open a location in downtown Hartford’s Maison Morneault building.
The aptly named Insomnia Cookies, which offers in-store pickup and delivery options until as late as 3 a.m., will be in a 1,500-square-foot storefront at 247 Asylum St., near the intersection with Ann Uccello Street.
The mixed-use building contains apartments on the upper floors and has three retail spaces on the ground level. It’s owned by Cue Associates LLC, which is controlled by Nicholas and Lisa Perfito of Avon.
The announcement comes as UConn plans to build student residences on Pratt Street, a block and a half away from the new Insomnia Cookies. Also, the University of St. Joseph announced it will offer student housing in downtown Hartford’s Millennium Apartments.
According to a job posting on LinkedIn, Insomnia Cookies is actively recruiting an operations manager for its Hartford store.
A spokesperson for the company said the Hartford location will open this fall.
The late-night bakery chain has more than 260 locations, including two in Connecticut – in New Haven and Storrs.
Insomnia Cookies was co-founded by 43-year-old Seth Berkowitz, who now serves as CEO, in 2002 when he was a student at the University of Pennsylvania.
Insomnia Cookies opened its first brick-and-mortar store in Syracuse, New York, in 2006.
