IT and business consulting firm CGI is opening a new office in downtown Hartford.

The company will be taking over a suite at 1 American Row, known locally as the “Boat Building.” CGI officials said nearly 200 employees will eventually be based there.

Executives, together with city and state officials, gathered outside the 13-story office tower for a ceremonial ribbon-cutting on Tuesday.

"We are excited about our new location in downtown Hartford," said Scott Burghoff, senior vice-president of consulting services. "The location's proximity to our clients and innovative technology companies will provide more opportunities for direct collaboration."

Steve Bosic, director of communications at CGI, said Tuesday that the firm has occupied temporary offices in Hartford and that the suite at 1 America Row will be its permanent location in the city going forward.

The company also announced it has established a tech-centered scholarship at the University of Hartford. The CGI Diversity Scholarship will be open to students in the areas of computer engineering, computer science, data analytics and data science, and is intended to help close "the equity gaps that keep talented students of color from entering these fields," according to University of Hartford Provost Fred Sweitzer.

CGI is part of CGI Group Inc., which has its international headquarters in Montreal. The company employs around 78,000 consultants and other professionals globally.
