Julia Winer has devoted her career to working for mission-driven companies. She began her work in the field of education and pivoted to health care after obtaining her MBA from UConn. She has held senior leadership roles for 10 years, most recently joining Silver Fern Healthcare as senior vice president to oversee communications, marketing, and product improvement.
Winer has experience in nearly every area of business and is passionate about using her skills to bring about positive change.
What’s been your biggest professional accomplishment so far in your career?
One of my most fulfilling professional experiences was teaching in the UConn School of Business. I taught business communications to full-time MBAs and business statistics to executive MBAs. Teaching stretched my mind in new ways and working with and learning from students was immensely rewarding.
How are you involved in the community?
I am a member of the Watkinson board of trustees, where I proudly support a school that exemplifies an education model that I believe all schools should adopt. I serve as a wish granter for Make-A-Wish CT, where I have the honor of meeting the bravest children in our state.
What do you like to do outside of work?
My family brings me joy and purpose, so I spend a lot of time with my husband and two young children — outdoors whenever possible. My husband and I enjoy volunteering together, and in my alone time, I like to exercise, listen to podcasts, and read.
How will the coronavirus pandemic change the way you work long term?
COVID has made me acutely aware of the seriousness of the work we are doing at Silver Fern Healthcare to improve the health of people with chronic conditions. I am leaning into my work more than ever and am considering new opportunities to contribute to a better post-COVID world.
Four reasons why you deserve to be a 40 Under Forty:
I led lobbying campaigns that resulted in millions of additional funding dollars for public schools.
I served on Gov. Lamont’s Education Policy Transition Committee.
My master’s degree at Oxford was awarded with distinction, and I graduated No. 1 in my class at the UConn School of Business.
I led the reorganization of three sales divisions at CREC, which required analyzing business needs and reconceiving the business model; managing staffing; preparing communications; and developing a multimillion-dollar budget.
I have visited 25 out of 30 major league ballparks with my husband.
