Kara Mitchell is principal of client service with Mintz + Hoke, an advertising agency specializing in complex, business-to-business industries. Mitchell has been providing clients marketing expertise for close to 15 years. All the while, she has truly embraced and worked to redefine the role client service plays in the advertising industry.
Today, she guides her team to understand how to be champions of their clients' businesses and experts in all the dynamic areas the advertising industry has to offer.
What's been the biggest professional accomplishment so far in your career?
As the business landscape continues to evolve, the role advertising agencies play will, too. Working with my leadership counterparts at Mintz + Hoke, I have helped define how the agency plays a role in our clients' businesses today and how that will continue into the future. And I have worked hard mentoring client service team members to understand the evolving role of client service and how to embrace the constraints brought on our industry today.
How are you involved in the community?
I choose to give my time to organizations that advance the growth and development of young women and give people a fair chance at success. The Girl Scouts of CT, The Miss Connecticut Organization, Habitat for Humanity and the Closer to Free Ride all do just that.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I love anything that involves being outside and physical fitness. I love to bike, run, hike, paddle board and attend boot camp classes.
Give an example of a people-skills habit you adhere to in your work and daily life that you feel has helped you succeed.
The golden rule. It's important to understand everyone's position. In client service especially, you come in contact with many different people and personality types so it's vital to think of your clients as people first and treat them with the same respect you would hope to receive.
What must the Greater Hartford region do to attract more talented young professionals?
The Greater Hartford region, as a brand, must establish a position for itself — how do we define it and fill a need other regions and states do not?
Four reasons why you deserve to be a 40 Under Forty:
• One of the youngest agency principals in company history.
• Championing women's professional development through involvement with Girl Scouts of CT.
• Worked with Mintz + Hoke agency leadership to achieve 8-10 percent revenue growth over the last three years.
• Volunteer participation with Habitat for Humanity, Closer to Free Ride and Miss Connecticut Scholarship Program.
