Age: 35
Company: Connecticut Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (CICATS) at the University of Connecticut (UConn Health)
Title: Research Facilitator and Community Outreach Coordinator
City where I live: Hartford
Town where I work: Farmington
College: University of Connecticut
What do you do and what are your goals at current job? At CICATS, I lead the planning of multiple health disparities projects. I am also expanding our connections with community organizations for outreach events and education, which lead to partnerships for community-based participatory research grants. My goals are to secure grants for health initiatives and expand our community outreach partners.
What are your goals for your community involvement? I serve on the Greater Hartford Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) Coalition, Junior Apprentice, and the New Britain Industrial Museum boards. My goal is to leverage my skillsets to meet the missions of each board.
What's your biggest passion? Traveling internationally. The further I get away from my own culture, the more I am challenged to get out of my comfort zone and view the world from different perspectives. When I return, I feel like I can re-approach work and life with 'fresh eyes' and a greater appreciation.
What are your future aspirations? I would love to own my own grant-writing business, work as a strategic-planning consultant, and work on public-health projects overseas.
What role can young leaders play in shaping Hartford's future? Young leaders can shape Hartford's future by asking, 'What are my passions? How can I help?' I feel privileged to serve Hartford through my professional work at UConn Health and volunteer work in health and education for our communities. Being able to combine my personal passion with my professional career has opened the door to many opportunities including working with the REACH Coalition to expand diabetes education, community outreach and patient connection to providers. Additionally, I am able to use my personal and professional contacts for mentor and speaker recruitment in support of Junior Apprentice.
I've worked on research projects in Hartford communities for 13 years, first in drug and alcohol research and now in health-disparities research. I'm committed to finding interventions and solutions to some of our toughest problems.
I invest my time in communities that need it most. I've been fortunate to align my career and personal passions to maximize my contributions to my city, state and the global community.
I am a connector and use this power for good. If you need a job, an apartment, anything, I'm your go-to woman.
I've lived in Hartford for over five years and I'm invested in our success.
What personal possession in your life has withstood the test of time? My well-worn passport
What hobby did you develop at a young age that you still enjoy today? Downhill skiing
Twenty years ago, what did you envision as your future profession? Archeologist or journalist
Who do you consider your mentor? My brother, Curtiss Van Dorn Hayden, CEO, Skytemple Digital Agency
