More Information

Katherine (Katie) Lane leads the financial controls program at Webster Bank, overseeing the company’s Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance program as well as reconciliation governance.

Prior to Webster Bank, Lane was responsible for the SOX and internal audit programs at Farmington Bank (acquired by M&T Bank). She started her career in public accounting at PwC, focusing on both external and internal audits of public financial institutions.

Lane received her bachelor’s degree in accounting from UConn and is a certified public accountant and certified internal auditor.

What have been your biggest professional accomplishments?

During my tenure at Webster, I developed a best-in-class SOX compliance program, resulting in a stronger understanding of financial risks and controls across the organization, early identification of control gaps, and timely resolution of issues.

I recently took on the challenge of leading the company’s new reconciliation governance program, and am excited for the opportunity to diversify my skill set.

What’s the next big goal you want to accomplish professionally?

With my recent promotion, oversee our reconciliation compliance team, focused on expanding and maturing our reconciliation governance and monitoring program, and  strengthening processes and reconciliation controls for our general ledger accounts. I  am looking forward to this new reconciliation governance program and the opportunity to continue my professional development.

What’s one of the biggest professional challenges you’ve overcome?

Leading the SOX integration after our merger with Sterling National Bank included standardizing methodologies across two different programs and centralizing testing efforts into a team of subject-matter experts. The integration required a strategic review of existing processes and controls, organization-wide training and communication with key stakeholders, and alignment with the executive team’s views on risks in the company’s new operating environment.

How are you involved in the community?

I am a mentor in the UConn network and previously served on the board of directors for Bristol Adult Resource Center.

What are your keys to maintaining business success?

Being transparent, fostering collaboration and holding myself and others accountable have been my keys to success throughout my career. As a relatively new working mom, I have also found that ‘giving myself grace’ in everything I do has been crucial to balancing my career and my home life.
