Who is your favorite superhero? The Incredibles
Kathryn O’Neil is a communications associate at Otis Elevator Company. In this role, she manages the Otis world headquarters social media channels that include Facebook, Linkedin, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube. O’Neil is focused on building the company’s external presence through content development, thought leadership and customer service.
Prior to working at Otis, she worked at United Technologies, Pratt & Whitney and CPTV/WNPR. She received her master’s degree in communications from the University of Hartford and her bachelor’s degree in psychology and English from UConn. In college, she participated in semester at sea where she circumnavigated the globe on a ship and visited 12 countries along the way.
What’s been your biggest professional accomplishment so far in your career?
I produced a video titled “Pratt & Whitney Employee, Marie, Supported and Empowered by Her Colleagues” about an employee’s gender transition and how her colleagues supported her and empowered her to be herself. It was the top internal story of the year with over 20,000 views and externally had over 1,000 views.
How are you involved in the community?
I led United Way Emerging Leaders Society’s signature fundraiser Boogie for Books where we raised $24,000, a 53 percent increase compared to last year. Last year, I created and implemented United Way Emerging Leaders Society’s first-ever social media blitz where in 24 hours, $4,500 was raised and over 300 people were engaged with the campaign. I’m also part of CPTV/WNPR’s community advisory board and active in HYPE.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I love to travel. I have been to 48 countries and all seven new Wonders of the World. I’ve been on a homestay in the small village of Senase, Ghana, been to Vietnam with Lyndon B. Johnson’s daughter, Lynda Byrd Johnson Robb, and gone to a World Cup Game in Brazil. I also love writing postcards.
Four reasons why you deserve to be a 40 Under Forty:
• Volunteer for United Way, CPTV/WNPR, Journey Home and the Chrysalis Center.
• Uses social media to make a positive impact: Building Otis Elevator’s external presence through strategic social media content and building Hartford nonprofit social media channels through United Way’s social media blitz.
• Go-getter attitude and enthusiasm for Hartford.
• Done a lot to make Hartford a better place by engaging Millennials to volunteer, support nonprofits, etc.
I love to kayak.
