Law firm Updike, Kelly & Spellacy is trading one downtown Hartford address for another.
The firm, which has five offices throughout the state, is moving its headquarters from the current location at 100 Pearl St. into Goodwin Square, where it will occupy a slightly smaller space.
Updike leases 25,000 square feet in its Pearl Street location but will lease 18,000 in its new home on the 20th floor at Goodwin Sqaure on Asylum Street.
John Alissi, firm president, said Updike’s current lease expires Jan. 31, 2022.
“We have been considering various options for over a year and signed the agreement last month,” Alissi said in an email.
He said the move is not related to Hartford HealthCare’s expansion at 100 Pearl St., nor is the smaller space a result of people working remotely.
“Our new space will be a smaller footprint than the space we currently occupy and that was a conscious decision because we have made investments in technology and we don’t require the large office space once held by many law firms,” Alissi said.
For example, the firm no longer needs a large library because those publications are now stored electronically.
“The reduction in space was not a result of hybrid/remote working and instead was a decision to try and keep the size of offices uniform and to make better use of our offices and take advantage of advancements in technology,” Alissi said.
The firm, now in its sixth decade, also has offices in New Haven, East Haven, Middletown and Storrs.
