A 30-year-old law firm that’s seen its attorney ranks shrinking in recent years will close up shop.
LeClairRyan announced Wednesday afternoon that its members had voted to approve “an orderly wind down” of the firm’s business, which it said was “in the best interest of our clients, colleagues, and creditors.”
The firm established a Hartford office in 2010. It also has a New Haven office, which is its oldest in this state.
LeClairRyan’s website listed a total of 225 attorneys across 21 U.S. offices as of February. That’s down from nearly 400 lawyers just four years ago. A key departure came late last month, when co-founder and name partner Gary LeClair left for another firm, Law.com reported.
Of the lawyers who remain, three are listed in Hartford (the office once claimed 10) and 14 in New Haven, though some of the latter group are also based in New York.
A reporter’s call Thursday to the Hartford office, located in the Gold Building, was rerouted to the firm’s Virginia headquarters, where a spokesperson didn’t immediately respond to message seeking comment.
LeClairRyan’s announcement suggested that many of its attorneys could depart over the coming weeks.
“As it begins the wind down process, LeClairRyan will for a short period continue to serve clients in matters already commenced to protect the interests of those clients, as well as employees and creditors,” the firm said. “LeClairRyan is committed to ensuring a seamless transition for clients.”
