Legrand unveils 500kW fuel cell

West Hartford manufacturer Legrand North America this week unveiled a 500-kilowatt Bloom Energy fuel cell that it says will power as much as 88 percent of its headquarters and manufacturing campus.

The fuel cell is expected to lower the facility’s carbon emissions by as much as half and save Legrand up to $2.4 million over the next decade, the company said.

Legrand makes mechanical and digital household and commercial lighting and power switches, controllers and sensors.

The company pledged five years ago to reduce its energy intensity by 25 percent over a decade across 14 U.S. facilities, including a goal of a 10 percent reduction at its West Hartford home base, where it employs nearly 600 people, within two years.

Legrand said it hit both goals within two years, and has now pledged to cut another 25 percent in energy intensity across all North American facilities compared to a 2012 baseline.
