Macy’s closing Enfield store

Macy’s Enfield location at Enfield Square Mall will be closed as a planned shuttering of 70 stores across the United States. Approximately 104 associates are affected by the closing.

Macy’s announced the shuttering as part of a series of cost-efficiency and process improvement measures to be implemented beginning in early 2016 that will reduce selling, general and administrative expenses by approximately $400 million while still investing in growth strategies, the department store chain announced.

There will now be 12 Macy’s locations in Connecticut. Locations in West Hartford, Manchester and Meriden were not affected by the announcement. The Enfield Square Mall, where the closing store was located, was briefly considered as a site for a third casino in Connecticut before town officials denied the proposal.

In the next two years, the company plans to open about 50 additional Macy’s Backstage off-price locations (most of which will be inside existing Macy’s stores), and about 40 freestanding Bluemercury beauty specialty stores.
