Mae Maloney is a program director at Leadership Greater Hartford (LGH), a community leadership organization that develops, inspires and connects diverse leaders to build strong and vibrant communities. Maloney began as a program assistant and steadily rose through the ranks to become the program director for Leaders On Board, a program that has trained more than 650 people and placed them on more than 130 nonprofit boards of directors.

Maloney's other responsibilities include managing Encore!Hartford, a collaboration with UConn that prepares people transitioning from the corporate sector to nonprofit careers. She supports LGH youth programs and consulting and training clients.

What's been your biggest professional accomplishment?

Historically the idea of serving on a nonprofit board may have seemed available only to those in the C-suite or those with deep pockets. I redesigned the Leaders On Board program so people throughout the community would feel engaged, equipped and energized about the prospect of serving on a nonprofit board of directors. The program now helps individuals from various backgrounds feel they have much to offer a nonprofit board.

How are you involved in the community?

I have served on numerous boards, most recently the Windsor Education Foundation. I continue to support, nurture and mentor students in various youth programs, particularly as they work to develop and implement community-service projects.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I am the mother of a 3 year old, Finn, so much of my time is spent chasing him around.

Give an example of a people-skills habit you adhere to in your work and daily life that you feel has helped you succeed.

A dear family friend once told me that if you expect the best from people you will get the best. I have found this to be true. I enjoy making connections with people and finding common ground related to shared interests, challenges, passions. Digging a bit deeper and having real conversations has allowed me to find common space upon which both professional and personal friendships have been built.

What do you hope Greater Hartford will be like in 10 years?

I hope Greater Hartford will be filled with people who are proud of the Capital City and take advantage of all it has to offer.
