MakerSpaceCT signs downtown lease at G. Fox Building

A large, long-vacant space in downtown Hartford will soon be home to machine, wood, welding and robotics shops, a fledgling makerspace organization announced Tuesday.

MakerSpaceCT, started by wife-husband team Devra Sisitsky and Bryan Patton, will outfit more than 20,000 square feet at the G. Fox Building on Main Street.

Patton and Sisitsky had originally hoped to build out space in the Colt Building, but could not come to terms with the owner.

“Connecticut has the potential to be a national leader and invest in the next generation of

Makers,” MakerSpaceCT said in a statement. “Our manufacturing history can be the foundation for a vibrant, tech-savvy, economy-driving future. MakerspaceCT will be in the vanguard of that effort, with innovation, entrepreneurship and workforce development at the core.”

Patton said recently that he expects the buildout to cost about $700,000. Construction will begin by year’s end, but MakerSpaceCT plans to launch educational workshops in computer programming, laser cutting and other maker disciplines this winter.

The Rutledge Foundation has pledged support to the organization, which falls under a nonprofit called McEIVR. MakerSpaceCT, part of a Hartford-East Hartford coalition that successfully competed in CTNext’s $30 million Innovation Places program, is expected to receive $45,000 from that program.

A fellow Innovation Places coalition member, the InsurTech Accelerator, is housed across the street in the Stilts Building.
