Malloy: $15M would position New London pier for offshore wind activity

Twitter | @GovMalloyOffice Gov. Dannel Malloy was in New London on Tuesday advocating for $15 million in bond funds to improve State Pier.

The State Bond Commission this week will vote on $15 million in funding to repair and improve State Pier in New London.

Gov. Dannel Malloy’s office said Tuesday that the funding would allow the pier to compete with other ports to be used as a staging area by companies that have proposed seven offshore wind farms on the Northeast’s Atlantic coast. That includes an 800-megawatt proposal that’s moving forward in Massachusetts.

“In the next 12 years, we expect to see 7 to 8 gigawatts of new, offshore wind power come online in the northeast alone,” Malloy said in a statement. “With that new energy comes real economic opportunities for our region. As a result of these improvements, New London will be the perfect location to support the expansion of offshore wind. I have no doubt that the funding we invest today will have lasting economic benefits to the entire region in the years and decades to come.”

New London Mayor Michael Passero said the investment would be a step toward “unlocking New London’s unique potential as a hub for the offshore wind industry,” spurring growth of marine businesses and in the city’s downtown.

Specifically, the funds would be used to demolish selected structures, increase the pier’s laydown capabilities, build a heavy lift pad, improve stormwater treatment and drainage, and replace mooring dolphins.

The Bond Commission will convene Friday morning.
