The Board of Regents for Higher Education, which oversees 17 Connecticut colleges and universities, said Friday that it has named Mark Ojakian as interim president.
Ojakian, who takes over for Gregory Gray, starts work Sept. 28. He is currently Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s chief of staff. He earned nearly $203,000 in salary and benefits in fiscal year 2014, according to the state’s Open Checkbook website. Gray, meanwhile, earned nearly $464,000 that year.
Gray resigned Aug. 14, citing personal reasons, according to the Regents. His resignation is effective Dec. 31.
The Regents said they expected to finalize a two-year employment agreement with Ojakian soon.
Ojakian has worked in government for 35 years. He has previously served as deputy comptroller, deputy secretary for the Office of Policy Management, and senior advisor to the Commissioner of Higher Education.
Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said in a statement that he was supportive of the Regents’ vote.
“I know he will work well with the Board of Regents and our state system of higher education to make progress needed to improve the quality of education for all of Connecticut’s students,” Malloy said.
