A multifamily housing development with more than 400 apartments, a plan that had been submitted previously, won approval from the Middletown Planning and Zoning Commission.
New Jersey-based owner and applicant Bob Dale of Newfield Residential LLC can now move forward with building 15 multifamily buildings containing 414 units on nearly 50-acres of vacant land at 534 Newfield St.
Units will have a mix of one, two and three bedrooms. Buildings are three and four stories, and will have anywhere from eight to 44 units. Some units will be two floors.
The campus will also include three clubhouse buildings with a great room, outdoor grilling area, fitness center, swimming pool, pickleball courts and other recreational spaces, sidewalks and storage space.
There will be 746 parking spaces, including 104 garage spaces located in 11 garage buildings, and 25 electric vehicle charging stations.
Permits had been submitted in 2017-18 for this project, then got delayed and resubmitted in late 2022.
Dale and members of the development team could not be reached for comment.
In a letter to city land use boards, Johanna Bond, president of the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce, supported the project, saying it “will employ green construction techniques, will have a very positive economic impact throughout the city, and will provide the city with increased tax revenue.”
The project should be completed by early 2028.
