McLean proposes 52-unit expansion to Simsbury retirement community

The owner of McLean Retirement Community in Simsbury is proposing a $10 million expansion that would add 52 new residential units to its existing campus.

McLean Affiliates Inc. submitted an application to the Inland Wetlands Commission seeking a permit for the project, which involves building two wetlands crossings to open access the southernmost portion of its 110-acre property at 75 Great Pond Road.

The proposed expansion consists of two-bedroom duplexes ranging from 1,400 square feet to 2,200 square feet. Parking would be provided within each unit’s driveway and garage.

The project site covers about 22 acres, including 19 acres of trees that would be removed.

In addition to wetlands approval, McLean will need to secure approvals from the town’s Design Review Board and Zoning Commission.

McLean’s facility includes independent housing, assisted living, memory care and health services.

The nonprofit group’s continuing care retirement community also underwent an expansion in 2020.

Construction on the latest project is expected to begin in January 2026 and would be completed in December 2027.

A new roadway is proposed to access the units, along with improvements to Sarah Lane, including a new four-way intersection.

The property is surrounded by single-family homes and the Hop Meadow Country Club, which McLean also owns.

The north and central parts of the property are developed, while the southern portion remains undeveloped meadow and woodlands.

The property has 13 acres of wetlands and two intermittent watercourses.

On Tuesday night, the Inland Wetlands Commission scheduled a public hearing for 7 p.m. on Feb. 18.
