MDC: Drinking water passed contaminant tests in '17

The Metropolitan District (MDC), which provides drinking water to Hartford and 11 surrounding communities, said in a recently released annual report that its reservoirs, treatment plants and other sampling sites all met state and federal quality standards last year.
MDC’s lab conducted more than 145,000 tests last year for more than 130 potential contaminants, including lead and copper, as well as more benign contaminants.
“These tests and others conducted at various certified consulting laboratories confirmed that the potable water supplied by the MDC met all State of Connecticut Public Health Code and Federal Environmental Protection Agency standards for water quality,” MDC said in the report.
The state-chartered municipal corporation tested 81 homes for lead last year, and found three to be above the action level set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The threshold for noncompliance is 10 percent. MDC said that little to no lead was detected at those three locations once the water was allowed to run for a few minutes.
Meanwhile, copper was detected at a rate of 0.004 parts per millions on average last year, well under the EPA limit of 1.3 parts per million.
During 2017, MDC said it distributed an average of 47.7 million gallons of water per day to a population of approximately 400,000.
