New England Health Care Employees Union District 1199 announced Friday that mental healthcare staff at Gilead Community Services and Sound Community Services have finalized new contracts that include up to 20% wage increases and more affordable healthcare coverage.
The two new contracts also provide for additional wage increases according to longevity and – for the first time – designates Juneteenth, or June 19, as a new holiday. The minimum wage rate for employees at both locations jumped from $15.37 an hour to $18.52 an hour with additional increases for senior staff.
Union leadership said the pay increases were significant. Existing contracts for workers at both companies were set to expire in the next few years.
Middletown-based Gilead Community Services provides outpatient psychiatric counseling, residential services for the mentally ill, and other services. New London-based Sound Community Services provides behavioral health and substance abuse disorders.
Representatives from Gilead and Sound Community Services did not immediately return calls seeking emails.
