Meriden Sears listed on chopping block

Sears Holdings continued axing stores Thursday, announcing it will close its Meriden location and 39 others as it moves through bankruptcy proceedings.

Sears and its auto center at Westfield Meriden mall at 470 Lewis Ave. will close in Feb. 2019.

It was unknown Friday how many workers would be affected by the Meriden closure.

In total, the closure list includes 29 Sears stores and 11 Kmart locations -- adding to almost 200 facilities the 132-year-old retailer previously announced it would shutter in the coming months.

Sears’ parent company has struggled with debt for several years, and filed for bankruptcy in New York in mid-October when it owed a $134 million debt payment it could not afford. In the bankruptcy filing, the retailer said 142 of its worst-performing stores, including stores in Milford and Waterford, would shutter by year-end as part of its downsizing.

As of February, Sears operated about 1,000 Sears and Kmart stores and will have less than 500 after its latest round of closures.

Sears at the Brass Mill Center mall in Waterbury closed in September.
