Metro-North’s CT wireless service gets boost, $6M AT&T investment

State of Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont announced a $6 million investment by AT&T in wireless connectivity along Metro-North's rail line from New Haven to the state border at a news conference on Monday at the Stamford Transportation Center. Standing in the background are Leah Kagan, Stamford's director of economic development, John Emra, AT&T's Atlantic region president, and Chris Davis, the Connecticut Business Industry Association's vice president of public policy.

Metro-North passengers should experience better wireless service on their smartphones from New Haven to the Connecticut border, thanks in part to a $6 million investment by AT&T.

Gov. Ned Lamont and other state officials announced Monday that upgraded infrastructure has been installed at 30 sites along the rail line to boost AT&T’s wireless network and deliver faster, more reliable LTE and 5G service.

The improvements, which AT&T funded, include new high-powered macro towers and compact small cell nodes, the governor’s office said. Five new sites are set to launch later this year.

The project stems from Lamont’s broader initiative to improve cellular connectivity and accelerate deploying high-speed technology along Connecticut’s rail corridors  through public-private partnerships.

“Expanding the availability of high-speed networks is critical if we want to be ahead of the curve on technology that makes our state even more attractive to workers and employers, and that includes along our rail corridors, which up until recently contained many dead zones where cellular service would frequently drop,” Lamont said in a news conference at the Stamford Transportation Center. “By partnering with telecommunications companies and allowing them to install their equipment on state properties, we can expand high-speed service to more areas and do so in a cost-effective manner. I appreciate AT&T for collaborating with us on this initiative.”
