Michael Avicolli is a senior project manager at Standard Builders Inc., a construction management/general contracting firm.
Soon after Avicolli realized his passion for building and the construction industry, he joined Standard Builders in 2006 in an entry-level position, and worked his way up to senior project manager. He has been able to participate in the completion of some of the company’s most challenging projects for its most distinguished clients.
What’s been your biggest professional accomplishment so far in your career?
I have been selected by company ownership as part of a select group of senior management to participate in a strategic planning process, which will guide succession planning and company policies and procedures for the next five to 10 years. I’ve been charged with implementation of some of the most immediate improvements especially related to operational excellence.
How are you involved in the community?
I am an active member of my parish community at St. Patrick-St. Anthony Church, spend time volunteering and fundraising for Foodshare, and I have recently been busy as a member of the board of directors at Leadership Greater Hartford.
What do you like to do outside of work?
At home, I enjoy spending time with my wife, Tracy, and two young sons. Seasonally, I enjoy gardening in the summer and try to travel to Vermont for skiing in the winter. I love to cook year-round, especially for guests at our home, and I am an avid runner.
How did COVID-19 help you grow as a leader?
Isolation has made me realize that, to some extent, we all take daily personal interactions with our teammates and colleagues for granted. Moving forward, I will make a point to try to check in with all of my teammates on a more regular and meaningful basis, whether it be virtually or in person.
Four reasons why you deserve to be a 40 Under Forty:
• Worked up from an entry-level position to company leadership over a 14-year career with the same firm.
• Integral participant in crafting and implementation of company strategic planning process.
• Regularly selected to lead the company’s most challenging projects and commitments for its most distinguished clients and has helped develop many highly valued client relationships.
• Actively supports leadership development and community engagement both within my company and also in our community/region.
Anxiously awaiting sons’ Dominic (2 years) and Anthony (7 months) to be old enough to take skiing
Congrats Michael! Well done!
