A Michigan-based multistate cannabis business has opened its first dispensary in Connecticut, one of several planned as the recreational marijuana operator vertically integrates in the state.

C3 Industries’ first Connecticut adult-use cannabis storefront, High Profile Canton, opened Tuesday at 195 Albany Turnpike. The new dispensary is Canton’s first and one of several planned for C3 Industries; it plans to open another dispensary in Hamden.

The Canton store will be for product preorder and pick-up only for the first two weeks of operations, per an agreement with town officials, and a drive-thru window will debut at the store in the coming weeks.

While the Canton store is C3’s first in the state, the company has had other plans for a few years. Founded by brothers Ankur and Vishal Rungta in 2018, C3 was awarded a “Section 149” cultivator license in late 2022, which allows for large-scale cultivation sites to locate in areas disproportionately affected by the federal “war on drugs.” The company last year won local approvals to establish an East Hartford cultivator business at 241 Park Ave. and  217-221 Park Ave., and has been preparing the facility since then.

In May, C3 took on a $16 million investment from real estate capital provider NewLake Capital Partners, which is based in New Canaan.

The funding includes $4 million for the acquisition of a 58,500-square-foot industrial property in East Hartford, and a $12 million construction build out to repurpose the former cold-storage facility into a cannabis grow operation. C3 and NewLake have entered into a “long-term triple net lease” together for the facility, according NewLake.

Ankur Rungta said Tuesday that Connecticut is the sixth market his cannabis company has entered, following Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, Massachusetts and New Jersey.

"With our first retail location in Connecticut and our 58,500-square-foot cultivation and processing facility in East Hartford that’s in development, we're establishing a vertically-integrated presence and are fully committed to laying down roots in the state,” Rungta said.

High Profile Canton will host its official grand opening celebration with a ceremony and sales on Labor Day weekend from Aug. 30 to Sept. 2, the company said.
