A Middlefield emergency-response consultant has been sentenced to six months in prison for filing false tax returns, prosecutors say.
U.S. District Judge Vanessa L. Bryant last week sentenced Michael Callan, 70, to six months of imprisonment, followed by one year of supervised release, for filing tax returns that substantially underreported his income, the Connecticut U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
According to court documents and statements made in court, Callan owned Middlefield-based consulting firm Callan & Co. and was audited by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in May 2015 after failing to file tax returns from 2010 through 2015.
Amid the audit, he signed and filed returns for 2010 to 2012 that underreported income he received from his consulting practice, authorities said.
In total, Callan collected more than $276,000 in income from his business from 2013 to 2015, but failed to file a return for each of those years, they said.
He has agreed to repay the IRS $263,172 in taxes owed, plus interest and penalties.
Callan, free on bond, is due to report to prison on Feb. 26.
The case is being investigated by the criminal investigation division of the IRS, and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Lauren C. Clark and Michael S. McGarry.
