More than seven months after the sudden resignation of its longtime CEO Paul Gileno, the Middletown-based U.S. Pain Foundation has shed some light on the circumstances of his departure.

In a statement posted on its website last week, the foundation’s interim CEO Nicole Hemmenway wrote that the foundation had discovered “financial irregularities” in an audit earlier this year.

“The findings were clear that this individual had misused funds from the U.S. Pain Foundation. The Board concluded that the former CEO repeatedly misled and concealed information from the Board of Directors and staff. The Board demanded and received the former CEO’s immediate resignation,” the statement reads.

Pain News Network, a nonprofit industry news publication, obtained and published an email it said Gileno had sent the foundation’s staff and and board members in September.

In that email, Gileno suggested he may be facing jail time, and purportedly wrote: “I did take money and I will pay the ultimate price.”

The foundation’s stated mission is to “educate, connect, inform and empower those living with pain while also advocating on behalf of the pain community.”
