Mott Corp. has debuted a new 65,000-square-foot facility near its headquarters in Farmington, aimed at growing its clean energy business.

Up to 100 new employees will be based at the new facility. The company says the expansion will quadruple its production capacity for green hydrogen engineering components. The new facility comes online just a few months after Mott Corp. announced it will be acquired by publicly traded IDEX Corp. in a deal valued up to $1 billion.

“This new facility will continue to position Mott as a leader in clean energy development, and add to Connecticut’s strength as a home of innovation and manufacturing,” Mott President Boris Levin said in a statement.

Mott, which was founded in Farmington in 1959, specializes in microfiltration. Thin, porous metal sheets are an essential component in the generation of green hydrogen, which is a clean-burning fuel source produced by the electrolysis of water.

The company recently won a $10 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to accelerate design and manufacturing of the next generation of its technology, with the aim of driving down the cost of green hydrogen production. It’s part of the Biden administration’s “Hydrogen Shot” initiative, which aims to reduce the cost of clean hydrogen by 80% by 2030.

Global demand for hydrogen as a fuel source is expected to increase significantly in the coming decades.

Mott says the additional space will allow it to rapidly prototype technology products for customers not only in clean energy, but also in the semiconductor, defense and healthcare industries.
