A city-based development company is planning a new multifamily apartment and townhouse complex for the Newhallville section of New Haven.
An application to the City Plan Commission from The Glendower Group shows plans for a four-story, 71,600-square-foot building with 63 units at 201 Hazel St.
The Glendower Group is the development arm of the New Haven Housing Authority and is affiliated with the Elm City Communities agency. The city is listed as owner of the 1.5-acre, wooded parcel that runs adjacent to the Farmington Canal Trail and between Hazel and Ivy streets.
The building, dubbed The Promenade, would have 22 one-bedroom units, 29 two-bedroom units, 10 three-bedroom units, eight of which would be two-story townhouse units, and two four-bedroom units. The complex would also have a fitness center, community room, and bicycle storage.
“The proposed development aims to provide much needed sustainable and affordable housing for the city of New Haven,” the application reads.
The building has an “L” shape design to fit on the angled piece of property, with one “leg” of the building having three stories facing Ivy Street and the other four-story section facing the Farmington Canal Trail. The building was designed with different heights “to better compliment the Ivy Street context,” the application said.
The Glendower Group is in the process of building the McConaughy Terrace project, and has completed more than a dozen other developments in New Haven, including
Brookside I & II, Eastview Terrace II, Fair Haven at Chatham, the Mill River Crossing, Quinnipiac Terrace III and multiple RAD group buildings.
The architect for the project is Hartford-based Crosskey Architects
The project will be completed in one phase, starting in May 2025 and finishing by Nov. 2026, the application reads.
