N. England governors seek 3,600MW of clean energy

The six New England governors petitioned regional power grid administrator ISO New England for more transmission lines to bring 1,200 to 3,600 megawatts of clean electricity into the area.

The governors also called for expansions in the pipelines to bring in an additional 1,000 million cubic feet of natural gas into the region daily.

In December, the governors of the six New England states partnered in order to lower energy costs for the region by relieving infrastructure constraints on the delivery systems. Natural gas is seen as a low-cost heating and electric generation fuel, but the constraints in the pipeline when supplies dwindle and prices spike when the weather gets cold.

The upgrades to the electric transmission system will allow the region to import more energy as New England has a difficult time generating enough resources in-house, particularly clean energy like wind power and hydro. One transmission line typically would handle between 1,000-1,200 megawatts, so the governors are asking for about three new transmission lines to be built.
