More than 500 members of the Connecticut Bar Association have signed a public statement reaffirming their commitment to – and support for – the rule of law, amid concerns about attacks on U.S. democracy under the current administration.

Invoking the Declaration of Independence, the statement notes that the nation’s founders sought to prevent "an absolute tyranny” over states.

“Loyalty to the law is ‘necessary for the public good,’ necessary to democracy,” the lawyers’ statement says.

Tyranny occurs when leaders “refuse their ‘assent to law,’” it goes on to say.

The signatories’ “deep commitment to this nation's constitution and laws, and to democracy, brings us together to state publicly what has so often been taken for granted…,” according to the statement.

Specifically, it affirms judges’ right to remain free from retaliation based on their rulings, along with lawyers’ right to choose whom they represent.

The statement also highlights the government’s obligation to comply with court orders, and it defends constitutional protections such as the rights to counsel, due process, free speech and freedom of association.

The signatories include lawyers with different political beliefs, and of various backgrounds, working for law firms, nonprofits, corporations and the government.

The statement is the latest in “a growing wave of visible support for the rule of law,” the Connecticut Bar Association said.

Lawyers across the country have rallied around law firms that have been targeted by the Trump administration.

Recently, Attorney General William Tong signed a letter urging fellow lawyers to support national law firms that Trump has targeted.

The U.S. Marshals Service, which is responsible for protecting federal judges, has reported a significant increase in threats and harassment among the judiciary, according to Reuters.
