New York Developer Avner Krohn’s effort to build a new 100-unit apartment building on the former site of the Strand Theater in New Britain is getting a $4 million boost from Gov. Ned Lamont.

Krohn’s development is one of eight Connecticut projects that will share $23 million from the latest round of the Connecticut Communities Challenge Grant program, according to an announcement issued Thursday.

One of Lamont’s signature economic development initiatives, the grant program aims to leverage private investment in projects that increase vibrancy and vitality. The program aims to invest more than half of funds in distressed communities.

In addition to the Strand grant, the latest grants include:

  • Torrington: $1.4 million to renovate eight vacant and uninhabitable apartments into 17 high-quality units in the Sophia Building. Five of these will be affordable and one will be ADA accessible. The project includes renovation of four rundown, ground-floor commercial spaces and a building façade.
  • Bethel: $4.5 million for a mixed-use development of industrial land next to the Bethel Train Station into a “transit-oriented village,” including 200 apartments, 20% of which will be affordable.
  • Bridgeport: $2.5 million for the “Post Office Square” project in Bridgeport. The aim is to create incubator space for micro-retail, a dog park, events space, a beer garden, public art and food truck infrastructure in a formerly blighted section of the downtown.
  • Haddam: $4.55 million grant to Serving Our Seniors, a project transforming a former Haddam Elementary School into senior housing, a community food pantry, a park and dog park.
  • Hebron: $2.1 million for installation of community wells in Hebron, to enable construction of 52 housing units in the town center, along with other development.
  • Naugatuck: $3 million to expand the Naugatuck YMCA’s child-care center by renovating the former St. Frances Parochial School.
  • New London: $1.23 million to assist in the redevelopment of the former building of The Day in downtown New London into 35 residential units, four commercial spaces and a museum space dedicated to the newspaper collection.

The Connecticut Communities Challenge Grant program has awarded more than $95 million for projects in 21 cities and towns, facilitating the creation of more than 2,300 housing units, 300,000 square feet of office, retail and restaurant space, and at least 12 new public space projects, according to the state.
