New Britain church group buys St. John’s Lutheran property

Contributed 295 Arch St., New Britain

A New Britain church group has purchased a property in the city's Arch Street revitalization area, which will become its new home for services and community outreach.

Right Now Ministries Properties bought 295 Arch St., the former St. John’s Lutheran Church and rectory building, from St. John’s German Lutheran Church for $650,000 in a May 17 deal, according to Evan L. Berman, vice president of sales for The Broder Team at William Raveis, who represented the seller and buyer.

The campus features a 7,400-square-foot church and 5.900-square-foot rectory building that both date back to 1890, as well as parking.

Right Now Ministries Senior Pastor Rhasheen Brown said his congregation of about 125 members has already hosted its first service in the church this past Sunday

Right Now Ministries has been in New Britain for almost 20 years, most recently renting space at the Hole in the Wall Theater, Brown said.

This will be the first church property that the congregation owns, and leaders plan to use the space for services and their many community outreach programs such as a food pantry, teen programs, bible studies, addiction help, and leadership courses.

The Arch Street area is one of the city’s Neighborhood Revitalization Zones, which uses grants and funding allocated toward development projects, street and neighborhood improvements.

Brown praised New Britain city leadership, including Mayor Erin Stewart and their efforts toward revitalizing that area.

Brown said he’s eager to have the church be part of the effort, and that he looks forward to becoming a domestic mission for the area, with events like bookbag drives, basketball tournaments, Christmas charity endeavors and youth and young adult services.

“This building was perfect and specific to what we wanted to do,” Brown said.
