New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart confirmed Wednesday that she was throwing her hat in the ring for a sixth, two-year term as the Hardware City’s top political leader.
The 35-year-old Stewart, daughter of four-time Republican Mayor Timothy Stewart, has touted her economic record and has said 2022 was one of the best years yet for the city.
The past year, the mayor’s office has said, saw the launch of projects like phase one of the Energy & Innovation Park, the city’s new Health Department facility, the extension of the Stanley Loop Trail, and a partnership with GoNetspeed that will allow city residents access to affordable internet.
Stewart, the city’s 40th mayor and second woman leader, was a member of the city’s Board of Education before first running for mayor in 2013 at age 26. Many of her mayoral victories were by wide margins, despite running in largely Democratic city.
To date, no Democrat has announced intentions to run for mayor in the 2023 election.
