A new dessert shop has opened in downtown New Haven, part of the growing Shops at Yale section of town.
Vía Láctea sells non-dairy frozen desserts and house-made pastries.
Owners Reinaldo Sánchez and Chef Lorivie Alicea opened the store at 2 Whitney Ave., in the city’s Whitney-Audubon Retail and Arts District.
The company was founded in Puerto Rico by Sánchez and Alicea, and recently distinguished as a 2024 James Beard Foundation Awards semifinalist in the outstanding bakery category.
Both are natives of Puerto Rico. Sánchez studied business management and plant-based nutrition at Cornell University. Alicea has worked for more than a decade as a pastry chef.
Alexandra Daum, Yale University associate vice president for New Haven affairs and university properties, said Vía Láctea is a natural addition to the Whitney-Audubon Retail and Arts District.
The new site is part of The Shops at Yale, run by Yale University Properties, which includes commercial properties, including retail stores, office spaces, and residential units in New Haven.
