New England wins $389M federal grant to connect wind power to electric grid

The U.S. Department of Energy announced that New England’s electric grid will receive a $389 million upgrade.

Connecticut and five other New England states submitted the proposal, called “Power Up,” in April as part of the Department of Energy’s $10.5 billion Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships grant program.

“This selection is a strong endorsement of the New England states’ longstanding, cooperative approach to solving our region’s grid challenges, including through new and innovative technologies like offshore wind and long-duration storage that will enable us to equitably and affordably transition to a cleaner and more reliable grid,” Gov. Ned Lamont said.

The funding will help ensure that the states’ electric infrastructure can handle 4,800 megawatts of offshore wind power that will be added to the electric grid.

The projects include infrastructure in southeast Massachusetts and southeast Connecticut.

The investments will add more diversity to New England’s energy mix and increase reliability while lowering consumer costs and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, officials said.

“Power Up’s transmission upgrades will lower the cost of future offshore wind projects by providing new ready-made points on the grid for these projects to plug in reliably and affordably,” state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Commissioner Katie Dykes said.
