While one doesn’t expect healthy food choices at convenience stores alongside highways, that’s exactly what you can get now in Hamden.
On Wednesday, a new Alltown Fresh market and Mobil station opened for business at 1941 Dixwell Ave., near the Route 15 interchange.
The new business offers customers fresh and made-to-order food, including organic, gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian and locally sourced food options. It is the third Alltown Fresh market to open, as the farmstand-style brand also has stores in Plymouth, Mass., and in Waterbury.
Ryan Riggs, senior vice president of retail operations, said the company chose Hamden because it believed the area’s population would be receptive to health-focused offerings.
“We are focused on wellness and healthier products,” Riggs said. “The word ‘fresh’ is everywhere throughout the store. We thought our offerings would resonate with the community. Already, the reception has been very warm. People were stopping by even before we opened.”
The market does offer common convenience store items like candy and soda, but they are toward the back of the store.
The staff was handing out food and beverage samples — such as bagels with cream cheese and veggies — to customers on Thursday.
The store is in a brand new 3,800-square-foot building. The previous, smaller retail convenience store was razed to make way for the new construction.
Alltown Fresh customers can choose from an array of menu items, including all-day breakfasts, salads, sandwiches, protein bowls and more. It also has self-serve, bean-to-cup coffee machines. Guests can get breakfast made with cage-free eggs, protein bowls and healthy smoothies.
Eric Slifka, CEO of Global Partners LP, parent company of Alltown Fresh, said his company is focused on bringing locally sourced items, such as honey and organic produce, to customers.
"We understand that our guests' lives are busy, and eating healthy while on the run can be difficult,” Slifka said. “Each item on the menu has been thoughtfully selected to be as healthy and clean as possible."
The store is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with the kitchen operating daily between 6 a.m and 8 p.m.
