New Haven launches CT’s first EV garbage truck

City of New Haven New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker unveils the state's first electric garbage and recycling truck in New Haven on Tuesday.

New Haven on Tuesday unveiled the state’s first electric-powered refuse and recycling truck.

Mayor Justin Elicker and Public Works Director Michael Siciliano said the new electric vehicle will begin recycling pick-ups this week.

The American-made EV refuse truck is a 2024 Battle Motors LET 2 EV, and will provide financial, environmental, and quality-of-life benefits to residents, city employees, and the Elm City at-large, Elicker and Siciliano said.

The vehicle cost $336,000 for the city, and was purchased with federal incentives and state grants to offset the full retail price of more than $600,600.

Standard diesel-powered refuse trucks retail around $400,000, and based on current diesel fuel prices, the new truck is projected to save approximately $15,000 a year in energy costs, city officials said.

Also, officials said the truck will save thousands more in reduced annual maintenance costs, which taken together would fully offset the cost of the vehicle to the city over an estimated 15-year lifespan.

The electric-powered truck will also eliminate air pollutants, and avoid approximately 66.7 metric tons of CO2 climate pollution per year – the equivalent to 14 average passenger vehicles.

The new truck will also reduce noise pollution, running silently except when its hydraulics are operating.

Elicker said the purchase is the latest in the city’s ongoing efforts to engage in environmentally sustainable practices and reduce its carbon footprint.

The city has a fleet of 10 standard garbage trucks, but Siciliano said he hopes the electric truck is “a sign of things to come.”
