Along with London, Istanbul and Madrid, New Haven made the New York Times’ list of 52 Places to Go for 2023 – and city tourism officials are thrilled.
Bruno Baggetta, director of tourism booster Market New Haven, said making the list was due in part to the city’s marketing efforts, which include billboards along Interstate 95 and social media ads.
“We see this as a culmination of the hard work our city has put into community outreach and tourism,” Baggetta said. “This honor only further energizes our efforts to cement New Haven as a hub for connection and innovation.”
Times writer Alexander Lobrano highlighted New Haven’s history of invention and its vibrant and diverse arts scene. “Founded in 1638, it’s a place where people have always tinkered with, mused about and challenged the status quo,” Lobrano wrote.
Called out by name were the new Hotel Marcel and restaurant Villa Lulu, along with the NXTHVN community arts center in the Dixwell neighborhood.
According to the Times, instead of focusing on hot restaurant scenes or new resorts, the 2023 list “highlights places where change is actually happening — where endangered wild lands are being preserved, threatened species are being protected, historical wrongs are being acknowledged, fragile communities are being bolstered — and where travelers can be part of the change.”
“It’s wonderful to see New Haven recognized as a premier world destination to visit and experience the arts, culture, food, distinctive neighborhoods and so much more,” Mayor Justin Elicker said, adding that the city’s Cultural Equity Plan aims to support diversity in the arts.
Other U.S. destinations featured on the list include Greenville, S.C.; Grand Junction, Colo., and the Black Hills of South Dakota. Smaller international cities include Bergamo and Brescia in Italy; Morioka, Japan, and Auckland, New Zealand.
“We’re so proud to see New Haven included in The Times’ ’52 Places to Go’ list, and be in the company of such incredible destinations across the globe,” Baggetta said.
New Haven's coronation even made the media in Red Sox territory, where Boston.com referred to our city in a headline as “a New England destination,” accompanied by a photo of the Yale campus.
