A new downtown grocery store will open this spring to serve the area around New Haven’s Ninth Square, taking the space previously occupied by Elm City Market.
Market 360 will be established on the ground floor of 360 State Street, a 500-unit mixed use building. Elm City Market had been a fixture there since 2011, but shut down last year, saying it intended to move to smaller premises nearby.
The new store will be operated by local grocers Kim and Chris Choe, owners of the Sharon Farm Market in Sharon, Connecticut.
The intent is to focus on providing locally sourced products including vegetables, pork, and lamb from more than 20 local farms; regionally sourced seafood, and eggs from a farm in North Canaan.
The store expects to hire 50 people. It will have a soft opening in March, with a grand opening by May.
The 360 State Street garage will offer free parking for store patrons.
“In selecting an operator, we looked for a store that would serve all of New Haven and the surrounding area – not just downtown,” said Dan DeStefano, senior vice president of Beachwold Residential, which owns the building “The Choe’s relationships with wholesalers and local businesses allows them to deliver high-quality farm fresh foods at reasonable prices.”
“Continuing to have a convenient downtown market at this site that offers high-quality, locally-sourced groceries and goods is wonderful news for the residents of the Ninth Square, Downtown, Wooster Square, and other nearby neighborhoods,” said New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker.
