The State Bond Commission on Wednesday is scheduled to approve $6.1 million in funding for improvements to the New London port and state pier, according to Gov. Dannel Malloy.
Malloy announced Tuesday the bond commission, which he chairs, will consider the money for design, reconstruction, and enhancement of the warehouse and pier at the New London port, expecting to create or retain 74 construction jobs.
The construction will install an energy-efficient lighting system at the warehouse and improve its structures for better loading and offloading of shipments. Some of the $6.1 million will go toward general maintenance of the pier.
The New London improvements were among the recommendations in the state's port study, which seeks to improve the economic viability of the ports at New London, New Haven, and Bridgeport.
