A New Haven property owner is looking to add a few new apartments to an existing multifamily home in an effort to bring much-needed housing to the Elm City.
The City Plan Commission received an application from Wilson Bautista, owner of 432 Woodward Ave., to add a freestanding five-unit apartment building to an existing 1,330-square-foot, two-family house for a total of seven rental units.
The 0.63-acre property is in an eclectic area, bordered by Woodward Avenue, a condominium complex, East Shore Park and another residence to the north.
The applicant said the units will provide additional residential housing to the area, and the new apartment-style housing design is consistent with that of the surrounding community, including the East Shore Village Condominiums.
New Haven has seen a boom in large-scale multifamily housing developments in recent years, with an estimated 1,000 new units coming online this year. It will be the biggest year for residential projects in the past 20 years, economic officials said.
The new complex would feature driveways, walkways, retaining walls, drainage infrastructure, and utilities.
One apartment on the lower level will be designated as an Americans with Disabilities Act-accessible unit.
