Connecticut State Community College recently secured its initial accreditation from the New England Commission of Higher Education to establish a 17-campus statewide community college.

The decision was needed for the planned consolidation of Connecticut’s 12 community colleges and launch of the new Connecticut State Community College (CT State) as a singly accredited multi-campus institution.

JoAnn Ryan, chair of the CT Board of Regents, said CT State officially opens July 1.

“It has been a long and sometimes challenging process, but I am confident that the new college will serve our students better and be more responsive to the workforce needs of businesses throughout the state,” Ryan said.

CT State President John Maduko called the initial accreditation a “pivotal milestone.”

“For over seven years, thousands of stakeholders and tens of thousands of hours have made this momentous plan a reality,” Maduko said.

Following this initial accreditation approval, CT State will be subject to commission site visits in spring 2025, followed by an evaluation in fall 2027.

More than 60,000 people take courses at the state’s community colleges annually.

Students who are starting their studies in fall 2023 will be CT State’s inaugural class.

With the consolidation, students may take classes at any state community college campus, access financial aid and other services, and obtain one transcript from CT State. CT State offers more than 300 degree and certificate credit programs.
