UConn will officially open a new $79 million residence hall, Next Generation Connecticut, on Wednesday, the university announced.

The 8-story, 210,000-square-foot building is the first one completed under the Next Generation Connecticut initiative to expand UConn’s programs in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and math). It has 727 beds, hosts several specialized learning communities, and features study lounges and an Innovation Zone with a 3D printer for students’ use.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, UConn President Susan Herbst, legislative and university leaders, Jonathan the Husky dog, and students are participating in the ribbon-cutting ceremony, set for 11:30 a.m. in the eastern patio area at 2378 Alumni Drive in Storrs.
