New York medical school to launch CT research center

Mount Sinai Hospital’s medical school will launch a genomics research center in Branford, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s office announced Thursday.

The New York City-based Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai will create 142 full-time jobs in Connecticut over the next five years, in exchange for a $9.5 million loan with favorable terms from the Department of Economic and Community Development.

If the Icahn School hits its job creation milestones, DECD could forgive up to $7.25 million of the loan, officials said.

Mount Sinai said the expansion to Connecticut was necessary because of recent rapid growth of its existing genetic testing lab in New York. The Branford facility will allow research to sequence large volumes of patient DNA as they seek to find treatments for cancer, diabetes and other major diseases, the school said.

Eric Schadt, a professor at the Icahn School, said in a statement that he and his colleagues hope to collaborate with Connecticut’s growing genomics cluster.

“Connecticut offers an incredible talent pool of biomedical expertise and leading institutions such as Yale, UConn Health, and Jackson Labs that we hope to form significant collaborations with,” Schadt said.
