The Newington Plan and Zoning Commission has withdrawn its application for a proposed cap on the number of retail and micro-cultivator cannabis establishments.
A hearing on the proposed cap had been scheduled for July 27. Town Planner Renata Bertotti said commissioners decided to wait on imposing any cap on the number of permits until after the state begins issuing licenses for retail cannabis businesses.
Newington’s cap was proposed after the state eliminated regulations limiting retail and micro-cultivator units in towns to one per 25,000 people.
The population-based cap would mean Newington could have two shops.
Fine Fettle and Verano Holdings Corp. have already gained local approval for hybrid operations, and are awaiting licenses from the state Department of Consumer Protection.
The Plan and Zoning Commission originally proposed the cap in order to consider whether it was appropriate in light of the state change.
“They didn’t step away from the idea, but they didn’t go toward the idea,” Bertotti said. “They just said, ‘Let’s wait.’”
Bertotti said before the cap proposal was withdrawn, her office received no correspondence from the public against or in support of it.
