Newly formed legislative commissions begin operation

Formed as a result of consolidation of several permanent commissions due to budget cuts, the newly formed Commission on Women, Children and Seniors (CWCS) begins operation today along with the Commission on Equality and Opportunity (CEO).

The Commission on Women, Children and Seniors will operate with an expanded mandate that includes key elements of the former Permanent Commission on the Status of Women, Commission on Children, and Commission on Aging. Its budget is $700,000, which includes operating expenses. Steven Hernández will be its executive director.

The African American Affairs Commission, Latino and Puerto Rican Affairs Commission and Connecticut Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission were combined into the new Commission on Equity and Opportunity. Its seven-member staff is headed by Subira Gordon. Information on its annual operating budget wasn’t readily available.
