Newtown-based publishing company acquired by Colorado firm

A Newtown publishing business has been acquired by a Boulder, Colorado-based company that specializes in niche enthusiast magazines.

The Taunton Press, a consumer media and book business, has been acquired by Active Interest Media.

The Taunton Press has been in business for more than 50 years and produces publications including “Fine Woodworking,” “Fine Homebuilding,” “Green Building Advisor,” “Fine Gardening” and “Threads.”

Also, the company has published hundreds of books under The Taunton Press imprint.

The acquisition “aligns several core markets and allows Active Interest Media to expand its mission of inspiring an ever-growing audience of enthusiasts to enjoy their hobbies and interests,” according to an announcement.

The deal roughly doubles Active Interest Media’s reach across the gardening, woodworking and homebuilding markets, the announcement says.

Andrew Clurman, president and CEO of Active Interest Media, said the two companies are “closely aligned on several important fronts.”

“Strategically, like AIM, Taunton has been aggressively pursuing the creation of new digital products, memberships and online learning to better serve their audiences,” Clurman said. “Most importantly, Taunton shares with AIM a commitment to growing and promoting both the communities we serve, and our fantastic teams dedicated to that mission.”

Clients of both companies can expect a “seamless transition and should not see a disruption in service,” according to the announcement.

Active Interest Media, which is privately held, produces consumer and trade events, websites, magazines, podcasts and TV shows with worldwide reach.
