UnitedHealthcare has provided a $1 million grant to the Connecticut Children's Medical Center's Office for Community Child Health to help enhance care delivery and address critical public health issues for children. These issues include child development, wellness, and chronic conditions such as asthma and obesity. The grant will help create a maintenance of certification program to train primary care pediatricians in managing diseases such as asthma and obesity. A UnitedHealthcare Innovation Fund will also be established to help the hospital's new child health office quickly bring new programs from design to implementation, and ultimately, to evaluation and replication.

Wallingford healthcare provider Masonicare has been awarded a $75,000 grant from the Connecticut Health and Educational Facilities Authority as part of its client grant program. The CHEFA grant will go toward Masonicare's statewide home health program, funding a new type of software that assists in the care of homebound patients with wounds. The product, known as “Wound Care Advisor,” will give Masonicare's visiting nurses the ability to more accurately and consistently monitor a patient's wounds.

Farmington's New Horizons Village, which provides support services to adults with physical disabilities, has been awarded a $185,000 capital project grant from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving for an energy efficiency project that will include a conversion to natural gas, the installation of high efficiency boilers and the removal of old underground oil tanks. The upgrades also include more efficient heat controls, which will benefit residents.

The Connecticut Valley Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America has announced the launch of a year-long partnership with The Village for Families & Children. This April and May, PRSA-CVC will support The Village's in-school food pantries by collecting non-perishable food items at its professional development events. In August, PRSA-CVC will host its annual summer social, donating a portion of the event proceeds to The Village's backpack program that helps families to cover the costs of uniforms and school supplies. PRSA-CVC will wrap-up the year by hosting a Toy Drive as part of its November annual meeting.

Millstone power plant operator Dominion recently donated $10,000 to Operation Fuel for its energy assistance program. Operation Fuel is a private, nonprofit statewide program that provides emergency energy assistance throughout Connecticut for the past 37 years to lower-income working families, the elderly and disabled individuals who are in financial crisis and not eligible for energy assistance from government-funded programs.

KNOX Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to building greener neighborhoods in Hartford, hosted its third annual Urban Greenhouse Party, which raised over $25,000 to support increased outreach into Hartford's diverse communities.
